In 2006 the University of Heidelberg and BASF set up a new joint laboratory devoted to basic homogeneous catalysis research, CaRLa, the Catalysis Research Lab. The concept relies on bringing academic and industrial researchers close together in one laboratory, fostering technology transfer. The laboratory is funded by both partners and by the Government of Baden-Württemberg. 8 postdocs work together in CaRLa, tackling mainly transition metal catalysis.

Depending on the reaction to be carried out either homogeneous or heterogeneous chemical catalysts as well as biocatalysts, i.e., enzymes or whole cells, are used. Besides the screening for and optimisation of catalysts also the catalytic conversion process itself is optimised.
